The definition of autocratic leadership by Samuel Huntington, “a system where power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small group, and is exercised without regard for the rights or interests of others” (Political Order in Changing Societies, 1968), aptly describes the current situation in Kano State, where the government’s actions have led to negative court rulings and significant financial challenges against the state and its people.
Autocratic leadership is characterized by a centralized power structure, where one person has complete control of decision-making. According to renowned Political Science scholars, autocratic leadership can also be defined as:
Robert Dahl defines autocratic leadership as “A system where one person or a small group of persons has complete control over the government and the decision-making process.” (Modern Political Analysis, 1963)
Larry Diamond defines autocratic leadership as “A system where power is concentrated in the hands of a single individual or a small group, and is exercised in a manner that is arbitrary, oppressive, and unaccountable.” (Developing Democracy: Toward Consolidation, 1999)
The Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, faces significant financial challenges after being ordered by courts to pay substantial compensation to individuals and organizations affected by the demolition of properties deemed illegal. The government has paid ₦3 billion from the state treasury in compensation to traders whose properties were demolished and faces an additional ₦8.5 billion payment.
The demolitions, which took place in June 2023, lacked proper legal backing, notice, or compensation. The government claimed the structures were illegal and needed removal. However, court rulings deemed the government’s actions illegal and unconstitutional.
According to political science scholars, autocratic leadership can lead to poor governance, legal problems, corruption, human rights abuses, and financial mismanagement. In Kano State’s case, autocratic leadership has led to legal disputes and financial challenges.
The Kano State Government’s financial woes are likely to continue due to legal challenges and disputes. To address these challenges, the government must respect public service rules and regulations and abide by the constitution.
The government should respect citizens’ rights and ensure actions align with state laws and regulations. The judiciary, legislative, and executive branches should work together to ensure check and balance, and fair governance.
In conclusion, the Kano State Government should prioritize transparency, accountability, and fairness, respecting public service rules and avoiding arbitrary demolition of properties without due process.
May Allah (SWT) bless Kano State and its people and guide our leaders rightly.

The D8 economic development nations consist of Iran, Egypt, Malaysia, Turkey, Nigeria, Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh all of them from the global Southern part of the world. The essence of the establishment of the block is for those nations to strengthen their economy and have a say in the global political, economic and social sphere. As a block the world nations will listen to them more.
The D8 economic block, also known as the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, was established in 1997. The idea of cooperation among major Muslim developing countries was first initiated by Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan, the then Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, during a Seminar on “Cooperation in Development” held in Istanbul in October 1996. The current meeting is held in Egypt and the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Yusuf Tuggar is representing the country in Egypt with a view to solidify the D-8 organization.
The D-8 Organization aims to improve the member states’ position in the global economy, political power, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and improve standards of living in their countries.
As mentioned above the organization has eight member countries, namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, with a combined population of over 1.2 billion people, which is about 60% of all Muslims or close to 13% of the world’s population. These countries have many resources like oil and gas in Indonesia, Nigeria and Iran. Pakistan is a nuclear power nation, Malaysia is second to America in ICT in the world. Also, Egypt is number one in the world in terms of tourism and it is home of medical tourism as well as Turkey is among the top 20 economic nations in the world.
As an economic block and in terms of global economic standing, the D8 Organization has a significant presence, with the total nominal GDP of the eight nations standing at around $4.92 trillion as of 2023. Trade between the D8 member states has also been increasing, with transactions accounting for 3.3% of world trade in 2010. This indicated that the government of Bola Tunubu seems to have become an economic player rather than a spectator.
It’s advisable for the current government in Nigeria to push more in global political, economic and social interplay in the world. Silence is a sign of weakness in political, economic and social activities in the world.
Conclusively, the Nigerian nation should try to be a full member of BRICS nations with a view to enhance the economy of the Nigerian nation as it seems that the global economic interplay may take direction in the near future. Also, the exit of 3 members of ECOWAS; Niger, B/Faso and Mali should be solved via diplomatic means. That will benefit Nigeria’s political, economic and social sphere in the eyes of the world and in Africa. Still Nigeria is the giant of Africa and the largest economy worth about $511B in GDP despite the huge debts in foreign and domestically.
Nigeria is still the most populous nation in Africa and number six in global ranking in population, despite the economic precarity, inflation, security challenges, food security and stagflation. Debts are not a hindrance in the capitalist market system. The largest and strongest economy in the world is the United States of America having “26% of global GDP” (The Next 100 Years: George Friedman 2009) but with about $35T worth of debts (USA is the largest debtor in the world). Nigeria is not alone in borrowing, Saudi Arabia 270$ debts, UK £3B worth of debts. Almost all the nations of the world are in debt. That’s capitalism for you.

Politics is a complex and multifaceted concept that extends beyond governmental affairs. At its core, politics is about power; the means through which power is acquired, exercised, and maintained. It’s the interplay of power that shapes the structure of societies and influences the behavior of individuals within those societies. As Sir Harold Lasswell defines it, politics is essentially “who gets what, when, how.” This definition encompasses the idea that politics involves making decisions that affect people collectively, and that these decisions are often influenced by power dynamics.
With this understanding of politics in mind, let’s examine the mutual respect and cooperation between His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Distinguished Senator Barau I Jibril, and its implications for the APC in Kano State and Nigeria.
The mutual respect and cooperation between Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Senator Barau I Jibril, the Deputy Senate President, is a significant development that has the potential to strengthen the APC’s position in Kano State and Nigeria.
Dr. Ganduje, a household name in Nigerian politics, has a deep understanding of the complexities of Nigerian politics. His experience in governance and politics has equipped him with the skills to build relationships, negotiate, and strategize.
As the National Chairman of the APC, Ganduje is poised to lead the party to victory. His cooperation with Senator Jibril, a respected politician and key player in the APC, is built on mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to the APC’s ideals.
The benefits of this cooperation are numerous. It strengthens party unity, boosts party morale, and enhances party credibility. The cooperation also strengthens the APC’s presence in Kano State, supports party development, grassroots mobilization, and enhances national credibility.
Dr. Ganduje’s achievements in Kano State are impressive. He has completed many abandoned and uncompleted projects, initiated gigantic projects, and promoted peace and security in the state. His records in education, healthcare, and commerce are unmatched.
Similarly, Senator Barau I Jibril has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills as Deputy Senate President, promoting unity and stability in the Senate. His experience and expertise will be invaluable in supporting Dr. Ganduje’s efforts to strengthen the APC.
The cooperation between Dr. Ganduje and Senator Jibril has significant implications for Nigeria as a whole. It strengthens the APC nationally, supports national development, and enhances national credibility.
As the party continues to navigate the complexities of Nigerian politics, this cooperation will be crucial in promoting party’s unity and political victory.
When the two unite, I foresee victory for APC in Kano State and Nigeria, God willing. Both are excellent political players when it comes to the game of politics, and their political profiles have been rising steadily since 1999.
Dr. Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and Senator Jibril as Deputy Senate President, are well-positioned to lead the party to victory.
Their cooperation is a testament to the power of unity, mutual respect, loyalty and cooperation in politics. As they continue to work together, I have no doubt that they will achieve great things for APC in Kano State and in Nigeria.
God willing (In Sha Allah).

On August 3, 2023, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR of Kano State was appointed as the National Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), succeeding Abdullahi Adamu.
This appointment marked the beginning of a new chapter in the party’s political journey, as Ganduje took charge at a time when the APC was looking for how to strengthen its internal structure and unify its members. Dr. Ganduje’s experience in grassroots politics may have made him an ideal choice for the party’s number one seat.
Since taking offer as APC National Chairman, Ganduje has been instrumental to the many success recorded by thy ruling party. In guiding the party toward a more unified and productive future, the APC’s performance has been greatly influenced by his leadership quality.
With tenacity and enthusiasm, Ganduje has embraced the duties of his new role as APC National Chairman. Bringing the party together and strengthening its structures at the grassroots and national levels were his main priorities.
He started by taking significant steps to guarantee the proper functioning of the APC’s internal procedures, which had previously been tainted by disputes and confrontations amongst party sections.
The high point of Ganduje’s leadership has been his strong desire to establish a Think Tank for research and training of party members. This is a rare feat and unprecedented. The setting up of The Progressive Institute, TPI, an intellectual resource center of the ruling party has been adjudged as the best legacy a real progressive leader can deliver to his people which Dr. Ganduje has given priority to since 2024.
In relations to this, the party’s chairman okays the proposed national conference on skills acquisition and youth empowerment, developed by the management of TPI, in his recent visit to the office in Abuja.
The ruling party did not only operate in a transparent and inclusive atmosphere where all party members have a chance to speak their opinions and advance the APC but also a movement that has attracted more decampees from other parties.
Everyone can testify his unwavering effort of introducing new members, where four Labour Party (LP) Representatives from the green chamber joined APC, so also from People Democratic Party (PDP) respectively.
Aside, the party has focused on strengthening its state chapters, ensuring that every region of Nigeria has an active and organized APC structure.
Dr. Ganduje has been instrumental in ensuring that the party operates efficiently at all levels, from the national hierarchy down to local chapters. This has involved engaging with party leaders across the country, ensuring that the APC remains responsive to the needs of its members and the electorate at large.
The APC National Convention, which was successfully organized in November 2023, was a significant highlight of Ganduje’s leadership. The convention, which brought together thousands of delegates from all over Nigeria, party officials, and other stakeholders, was a pivotal event for the party. It was held in Abuja. APC members used the convention as a forum to choose new leaders, talk about the same direction of the party’s policies, and restate the party’s dedication to the Nigerian people.
A tribute to Ganduje’s organizational prowess and capacity to handle the intricacies of such a major event, the convention ran smoothly and flawlessly. His leadership was further cemented at that time, proving that he could bring the party together and guide the APC through a time of change.
In addition to internal elections, the convention under Ganduje’s direction demonstrated the party’s democratic procedures, openness, and dedication to party unity.
Ganduje has put up a lot of effort to resolve these problems, stressing the value of communication and compromise.
Several long-standing disputes inside the party have been resolved as a result of his efforts.
By motivating party members to concentrate on shared objectives rather than personal aspirations, Ganduje’s leadership has played a significant role in mending divisions across groups. As a result, there is now greater harmony within the party, which allows the APC to show unity.
Furthermore, Ganduje has remained focused on promoting the APC’s ideology and advancing its manifesto. The APC’s agenda, which emphasizes economic growth, infrastructure development, security, and social welfare, has been a central theme of Ganduje’s leadership. He has consistently advocated for policies that promote good governance, job creation, and poverty reduction, ensuring that the party’s promises to Nigerians are fulfilled.
As APC National Chairman, Dr. Ganduje has collaborated extensively with state and national leaders to guarantee the successful execution of the party’s programs. His pragmatic style to government, which emphasizes the necessity of efficient service delivery and accountability, has been a defining feature of his administration.
In addition, the gentleman has initiated a move to de-marginalize Igbos to place them in the limelight of national politics. He assured them that the party had decided to break the vicious cycle of marginalization.
Additionally, Ganduje has tried to make sure the party continues to be receptive to the issues that the Nigerian people are concerned about, especially when it comes to infrastructural development, healthcare and education.
Apart from fortifying the party’s internal framework, Ganduje has played a crucial role in broadening the APC’s support. People who are dedicated to the APC’s principles and future vision for Nigeria have joined under his leadership, even though they come from a wide range of political backgrounds.
Through his outreach initiatives, Ganduje has been able to increase the party’s presence in previously underserved areas, making it a more inclusive and diverse political force.
In a short span, Ganduje has showcased exceptional leadership, deft political maneuvering, and an unyielding commitment to consolidating the APC’s dominance.
Under Ganduje’s leadership, the APC has recorded a string of impressive victories. The five off-cycle elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi, Edo, and Ondo states tested the party’s strength and strategy.
Remarkably, the APC emerged victorious in four of these contests, reinforcing its status as a dominant national party.
To digress slightly at this juncture, APC candidate in Ondo state gubernatorial election, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, delivered a landslide victory. He secured 366,781 votes, decisively defeating Ajayi Agboola of the PDP, who managed only 117,845 votes. Aiyedatiwa’s win cemented the APC’s stronghold in the state.
The situation is similar in Edo despite initial predictions favoring the PDP, the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, defied the odds. He triumphed over Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, challenging the influence of Governor Godwin Obaseki and marking a significant victory in a traditionally PDP-leaning state.
Likewise, in Kogi state APC continued its winning streak with Governor Usman Ododo securing an overwhelming 446,237 votes. He left his closest rival, Murtala Yakubu of the SDP, far behind with 259,052 votes, while Senator Dino Melaye of the PDP lagged with just 46,362 votes.
Additionally, in Imo state Governor Hope Uzodinma of the APC swept all 27 local government areas. He garnered an impressive 540,308 votes, leaving PDP’s Samuel Anyanwu and Labour Party’s Athan Achonu trailing with 71,503 and 64,081 votes, respectively.
This is a clear indication that APC’s influence has grown significantly as a result of Ganduje’s attempts to forge connections with different political parties, ethnic and interest groups. His capacity to interact with many groups, hear their issues, and integrate their interests into the party’s program has helped the APC’s base of support expand.
The APC is now more powerful and well-known in Nigerian politics as a result of his emphasis on unity, transparency, and responsible leadership.
As APC National Chairman, Ganduje has not only restored the party’s internal conflict but also ensured that the APC is prepared to pursue its goals in the future.
In summary, the APC has undergone a sea change since Ganduje was appointed as its national chairman. The APC has been able to fortify its structures and settle internal disputes under his leadership. An essential player in Nigerian politics, Ganduje’s leadership style is marked by pragmatism, inclusion, and a dedication to effective governance.
His accomplishments as National Chairman bear witness to his foresight, commitment, and capacity to guide the APC to unprecedented heights.

Rt. Hon. Kemi Badenoch, The Acting UK Conservative Party Leader,
By Maikudi Sunusi
In her recent remarks, Rt. Hon. Kemi Badenoch, the acting UK Conservative Party Leader, reportedly dismissed associations with Nigeria beyond her Yoruba heritage, distancing herself from Northern Nigeria and associating it narrowly with Islamism. These comments, replete with historical ignorance and political misjudgment, reflect poorly on her understanding of the intertwined histories of Britain and Nigeria, and by extension, her role as a leader in one of the world’s oldest democracies.
It is troubling that Badenoch, a figure who aspires to statesmanship, would exhibit such a parochial view of her heritage and of the complex relationship between the United Kingdom and Northern Nigeria. Her remarks not only betray an ignorance of British colonial history but also reflect a failure to grasp the significance of global citizenship—an essential quality for anyone seeking to lead in a post-imperial world.
Misunderstanding History
Badenoch’s attempt to disassociate herself from Northern Nigeria exposes a glaring lack of awareness about the rich and diverse history of the region. Long before colonialism, Northern Nigeria boasted a sophisticated socio-political structure, exemplified by the Sokoto Caliphate and other emirates. These entities maintained written records, produced scholarly works in Arabic, and upheld organized systems of governance.
British colonial explorers and missionaries documented these structures extensively. Figures like Hugh Clapperton, Mungo Park, and Frederick Lugard not only traveled through Northern Nigeria but also admired its systems of governance. The British colonial administration, recognizing the efficacy of Northern Nigeria’s traditional leadership, adopted the system of indirect rule to govern the region. This is a testament to the historical and administrative depth of the region—a depth Badenoch seems to have overlooked.
Furthermore, the Christian missionaries who ventured into Northern Nigeria risked their lives not to trivialize or divide, but to understand and engage with its people. Their contributions are preserved in archives that form part of Britain’s collective memory. To deny or dismiss this history is not only ignorant but disrespectful to the legacy of British-Nigerian relations.
A Failure of Diplomacy
As a leader in a global power, Badenoch is expected to demonstrate diplomatic acumen and cultural sensitivity. Her dismissive remarks, however, suggest a narrow worldview that is unbecoming of someone in her position. Britain’s legacy as the patron of the Commonwealth—a union of diverse nations shaped by shared history—requires its leaders to embody inclusivity and understanding.
By distancing herself from Northern Nigeria in such a derogatory manner, Badenoch undermines her credibility. Her comments seem less like the musings of a seasoned statesperson and more like pandering to fringe nationalist sentiments. Was she addressing British society, which has long recognized and documented the importance of Northern Nigeria? Or was she appealing to a clandestine audience of Yoruba nationalist agitators? Either way, her remarks reveal a political novice more concerned with short-term rhetoric than long-term statesmanship.
The Irony of Her Position
Badenoch’s position as a British politician of Nigerian descent is itself a product of the historical forces she now dismisses. Her parents, like many others from former colonies, benefited from the opportunities created by Britain’s imperial legacy. She was born in London, a city shaped by centuries of global migration and colonial history. Ironically, the very system she now seeks to lead is a product of the multiculturalism and interconnectedness she seems to reject.
It is also worth noting that Badenoch’s rise to prominence coincides with the UK’s struggles with political leadership. The Conservative Party’s internal crises have eroded its cadre of charismatic leaders, paving the way for figures like Badenoch. Yet her divisive rhetoric and lack of historical understanding only serve to alienate mature voters and diminish her standing as a potential statesperson.
Populism and the Far-Right Trap
While Badenoch may be tempted to align herself with the growing populist and far-right ideologies in Europe, she is ultimately a victim of these movements, not a beneficiary. The same far-right ideologies that demonize immigrants and minorities would not spare someone of her background. Her attempts to position herself as “more Catholic than the Pope” by demonizing others only highlight her vulnerability within such spaces.
Conclusion
Rt. Hon. Kemi Badenoch’s recent remarks reveal a troubling ignorance of both British and Nigerian history. Her attempt to distance herself from Northern Nigeria not only disrespects the region’s rich heritage but also undermines her credibility as a leader in a globalized world. Her rhetoric, steeped in parochialism and divisiveness, stands in stark contrast to the qualities of diplomacy, wisdom, and inclusivity required of a true statesperson.
Rather than deriding others, Badenoch would do well to reflect on the interconnected histories of the nations she represents and aspire to a leadership style that unites rather than divides. As history has shown, those who fail to learn from the past are often relegated to its margins. Let her words serve as a reminder of the perils of ignorance and the importance of informed leadership in a complex, interconnected world.
