No Measles Outbreak in Kano Municipal – Kano Ministry of Health

By Ibrahim Abdullahi

The Kano State Ministry of Health has refuted a media report saying that there was measles outbreak in Kano Municipal LGA which local and international conventional media lifted the story.

In a press release issued from the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry, the Director Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Imam Wada Bello, was quoted to have vehemently debunked the story in its entirety.

Dr. Imam pointed out that before disease is declared outbreak, there were certain procedures and indexes that are being considered, including laboratory investigations and examinations as well as assessing its gravity and number of people contracted.

In the case of Kano Municipal LGA, according to him, none of the procedures were conducted to warrant the declaration of measles outbreak, urging people to disregard the story because it lacks empirical and clinical evidences to substantiate it.

The Director assured that the Ministry is very vigilant on all public diseases causing havoc to the lives of the people by taking all necessary measures to contain the effect such diseases might bring about.

He further assured that the Ministry and its 44 LGAs Emergency Preparedness Response (EPR) were on alert to timely response to outbreaks in collaboration with the relevant stakeholders.

Dr. Imam noted that the Surveillance Outbreak Response and Management System (SORMAS), a national dashboard that showcased summary of Kano state measles report from January to March 2024, indicated that there was 697 “suspected cases” of measles in 23 LGAs in which Kano Municipal has the highest number of 647, adding that five samples were taken for laboratory test and none confirmed positive.

The Director reasoned that Kano Municipal became the LGA with high number of “suspected cases” because of the presence of Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital which serves as centralized facility for diagnosing and managing paediatrics cases including measles across the state not only within the municipality, stressing that it was that centralization that made the facility to lead in high reporting incidence of cases in the LG compared to other LGAs.

When contacted, the Kano Municipal Primary Healthcare Coordinator, Aliyu Jinjiri Kiru, whom the report was attributed to, said he was not at any point made such declaration.

He emphasized that it was the report of their emergency preparedness response meeting that the information unit of the LGA wrongly perceived that there was outbreak of measles in the locality.

Mr. Kiru said what they reported was that they received “suspected measles and diphtheria cases” from the health facilities within the LGA including secondary facility with intent of alerting the stakeholders to support the PHC department in order to curtail the situation in case it is confirmed.

Measles Outbreak Report Attributed to Me, Baseless – KMC PHCC

By Maikudi Marafa

Aliyu Jinjiri Kiru, the Primary Healthcare Center Coordinator in Kano Municipal Local Government has denied the purported report of the outbreak of measles which allegedly eliminated from him.

He described the report, which was published by an online newspaper as erroneous, and therefore be treated as such.

“I wish to make a clarification, to precisely counter the purported report of confirmed outbreak of measles in Kano Municipal which was wrongly attributed to me as untrue,” the Coordinator stated.

“I did not, at any point, make such announcement nor do I own the administrative authority to make such declaration.

“The media report sourced during EPR committee meeting and shared by SolaceBase was a mistake. What we said was that, ‘we have received suspected measles and diphtheria cases reports from health facilities within the LGA (including secondary facilities) with good intention of alerting all stakeholders in emergency preparedness & response to arouse their interest in supporting the PHC department in curtailing the situation in case it is confirmed,'” he clarified

Kiru then urged residents of the area not to panic, as the government is doing everything possible to improve healthcare delivery in the state.

He finally urged the media organizations to always verify their facts before going to the press.

No to change to Parliamentary System: And In Support Of Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo And Prof. Ango Abdullahi—2

By Abbati Bako,psc,bsis,Kent,UK

Researcher In International Politics

Knowledge and honesty always prevails. And knowledge is not what it is not and there is no error in knowledge. There is nothing that is above knowledge. It’s true that knowledge rules this planet.

Hence, since the beginning of the existence of this planet, knowledge control whatever you can see. Plato have said the truth that leadership has to be given to the gifted and knowledgeable people. So, leadership is a gift giving to few in any society around the world.

In a book launching (“Court and Politics” by Dr. Umar Ardo) in Abuja last week the former President of Nigeria Dr. General Olusegun Obasanjo sent cautionary words to the current generation of leadership about “changing of the system from Presidential to Parliamentary”. H/E Obasanjo says that “there is nothing wrong with the Presidential System” but inability to practice the rules and principles of the game accordingly is the problem.

And again, one of the country’s elder and leader of Arewa Consultative Forum Professor Ango Abdullahi sent another getter-y message for the current generation of political leadership in Nigeria to “go back to the drawing board” meaning to recalculate and assess how this country has been govern by civilians for the past 25 years and critically evaluate the movement of the country; progression or retrogression? This must be done!

The both respected two elder state-men in their early 90 years of age have tremendous amount of experience in life, knowledge, leadership especially the former President Obasanjo that led this country twice; as military leader and democratically elected President for eight years. He has huge amount of respect from around the world having the opportunity to led the most populous black nation in the world. Nigeria is a lucky country having a leader like Olusegun Obasanjo and is still around.

This writing is on the same page with H/E Olusegun Obasanjo for cautionary words against change from Presidential System to another one. This writing said it last week on the same issue. Senegal, Tanzania, Cameroon and many African countries that got independence for the past more than 60 years ago and practices the Paliamentary System of Government and they never change to another one.

Liberal Democracy (Presidential System) is not expensive it’s the operators of the system made it to be expensive. Even in the American practice of the system it’s the operators that made it not expensive. The whole issue is about how you cut cost of the system in accordance with the country’s earnings.

So, the problem with Nigeria has been that the serial bad class of leadership. A corrupt, none patriotic, egocentric and leadership with no mission, vision and lack of serialized strategic planning on how to make the country great among the 30 global economic emerging nations.

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum Professor Ango Abdullahi was the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a respected scholar and intellectual for over 60 years. He has spoken the truth on how bad this resourceful country is governed, currently and in the past. He has said that in a country that more than “4000 MG of electricity energy cannot be generated” how can the country be developed?

Some of the countries that are mates to Nigeria from 1960 to date such as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Indonesia has been as an excellent example in terms of governance and development; politically, economically and socially. Therefore, no one can compare Nigeria with these countries mentioned. But why? The answer is simple. One should make research and see who are their leaders and who are the leaders of Nigeria since independence. Also, India is another example. The country got independence from Britain for the past more than 70 years but despite their huge population and the global political, economic and social shenanigans; India is amongst the global top 10 most vibrant nation.

Conclusively, Nigerian leaders must wake up and imitate some of the world patriotic leaders not rulers. Leaders with vision, mission and knowledge on the global political, economic and social direction of development. So, a strong economy must be tremendously developed. Otherwise, Nigeria and Nigerians will regret especially the future generations yet unborn.
