The Kano State Judgement Saga: Abba or Gawuna

By Maikudi Muhammad Marafa
The recent judgement saga in Kano State has left the nation in a state of confusion and disbelief. The question on everyone’s mind is: who is the rightful governor of Kano State, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna or Abba Yusuf?

The controversy began after the 2019 gubernatorial election in Kano State, which was keenly contested between the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abba Yusuf. The election was highly contentious, with allegations of voter intimidation, ballot-box snatching, and irregularities in the collation of results.

After a protracted legal battle, the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal eventually declared Abba Yusuf as the rightful winner of the election, nullifying Gawuna’s victory. This decision was met with mixed reactions, as supporters of both candidates took to the streets to express their joy or disappointment.

However, the controversy did not end there. Gawuna appealed the tribunal’s decision at the Court of Appeal, arguing that there were errors in the judgement and that the tribunal did not consider all the evidence presented. The Court of Appeal, in a surprising turn of events, overturned the tribunal’s decision and declared Gawuna as the rightful governor of Kano State.

This unexpected twist in the case has only added fuel to the fire. Supporters of Abba Yusuf are outraged, accusing the judiciary of bias and manipulation. They argue that the Court of Appeal’s decision was politically motivated and did not reflect the will of the people.

On the other hand, supporters of Gawuna are celebrating the Court of Appeal’s ruling as a victory for democracy. They believe that the tribunal’s decision was flawed and that justice has finally been served.

The Kano State judgement saga raises serious concerns about the integrity and independence of the judiciary. The conflicting decisions from the tribunal and the Court of Appeal have only deepened the mistrust and skepticism surrounding the electoral process in Nigeria.

It is crucial for the Supreme Court, as the final arbiter in this case, to carefully examine the evidence and make a fair and unbiased judgement. The credibility of the judiciary and the democratic process as a whole are at stake.

Furthermore, this case highlights the urgent need for electoral reforms in Nigeria. The recurring issues of voter intimidation, ballot-box snatching, and irregularities in the collation of results must be addressed to ensure free and fair elections in the future.

Regardless of the outcome, it is essential for all parties involved to respect the rule of law and accept the Supreme Court’s decision. Violence and unrest should never be the means to express discontent or disagreement.

The Kano State judgement saga serves as a wake-up call for Nigeria’s political leaders and citizens. It is a reminder that the democratic process is fragile and must be protected. Only through transparent and accountable governance can Nigeria truly progress and thrive.
