KNSG Partner With CS-SUNN To Creat Nutrition Dept. In Line MDAs:

The Journey So Far

The Kano State Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) collaborated with the Ministry of Planning and Budget/State Committee for Food and Nutrition to conduct a one-day stakeholder consultation on leveraging partnership for the creation of a nutrition department in line with MDAs.

The workshop aimed to identify issues, challenges, and gaps in integrated and sustainable coordination (SCFN) state implementation plan of high impact on nutrition interventions with recommendations and actions to reverse the trend.

Participants were drawn from various MDAs in the state, including state directors and SCFN members.

The meeting was facilitated by Director planning MoPB and the State chapter Secretary, CS-SUNN.

The workshop alternated between presentations, plenary, and discussions with emphasis given to sharing experiences.

The specific objectives of the workshop were to understand the concept of an ideal six-month maternity and two weeks paternity, update stakeholders on the memo sent to Line MDAs for the creation of nutrition departments with open proposing process and follow up, discuss findings of national advocacy visits and plan for upcoming visits by state chapter and SCFN members, deliberate and agree on priority nutrition activities for inclusion into 2024 Kano State AOP that’s coming up, identify gaps in the state for advocacy asks, identify challenges in the implementation of six-month maternity/two weeks paternity and creation of nutrition department if it occurs, proffer solutions to identified gaps, recommend actionable points to resolve issues after review.


The Nigerian government through the Federal Ministry of Planning and Budget has identified a need for urgent implementation of nutrition departments at every sub-national level which recognizes that direct nutrition program and activities at all levels of government – state, local government – with complementary actions to address underlying determinants of good nutrition such as health services/healthy environment adequate care for malnourished/health vulnerable disabilities. In order to make any meaningful impact there are issues that need addressing which include barriers to accessing nutritional information 100%.

Therefore focus must be on translating values ambition global targets eradicate all forms of malnutrition into tangible actions address contextual needs local communities achieving full potential impact on nutrition/health development outcomes requiring coordinated approach on Nutrition governance.


The meeting was a great opportunity for participants from different agencies to share experiences learn from each other about practices that will help in solving some challenges issues discussed.

PHIMA and MOUN To sign MoU On Health Care Delivery

Director General of Private Health Institution Management Agency Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim said his agency will sign memorandum of understanding with maryam Abacha University.


The Director General stated this at the office of the Chairman and Founder Governing Council of the Maryam Abacha American University Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo.


He said the visit was aimed at establishing a solid relationship that will strengthen Health Care Delivery especially in a Private Sector in Kano, adding that, there are areas that where identified problems in regards to the operations of private facilities and need areas of collaboration involving medical waist management which can be dangerous to public.



The Director General further stressed that, traditional medicine practice to be in the mainstream of the health care system so that it can be improve in quality of care and in large scale at the commercial level, Thus there is need to upgrade the knowledge of practitioners through certificate or normal courses, this will boost health care delivery in the state.



In his remarks founder of the University Professor Adamu Gwarzo commended DG PHIMA and his entourage for the visit, emphasize that no society will develop without education especially scientific knowledge.

He therefore assured his redness to joint hands together with any meaningful organisation to move the  state forward.

PHIMA to Synergies with Association to Curtail Illegal Drugs

The Director General Kano State Private Health Institution Management Agency has reaffirmed that, his agency will Synergies with associations to curtail spread of illegal drugs among the people in the State.


The DG made the assertion while receiving the Kano State Hospital Friends Alliance Committee who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.


Professor Salisu Ahmad ibrahim said since his assumption into office he received various organizations who are willing to map out strategies and modalities which will in turn stride positive outcomes, adding that, The Agency has contacting DSS to joint hands together to conduct an investigation with the aim at fishing out culprits on drug abuse and most often engage in mobile operations to curtail the supply of illegal drugs,” but with the emergence of your association, I will also partner with your association to bring sanity into the health system in the state” DG said.


In his remarks, the chairman of the Committee Professor Mohammad Lawan kaurangini said the visit to the agency was aimed at conducting a stakeholders consultation and advocacy meeting on leveraging partnership for health development programmes and activities in the state.


He said they have members in all the 44 local government in the state who always engage to provide enabling environment for easy access to health facilities, stressing that, “We supply a lot of hospital items through the philanthropic intervention and we are equally mobilising people through the help of imams, ward head, traditional rulers as well as community volunteers to admonish people to go near by hospital when they are sick in order to reduce mortality rate”. Said the Committee Chair.


He however urge governments and the concern citizens as collective responsibility to curtail the supply of illegal drugs or to mitigate the free flow of such harmful substances in the state and also called on the government to give them office and vehicles to discharge their duties effectively.

PHIMA TO PARTNER WITH HEALTH ASSOCIATION TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES

The Director General Kano State Private Health Institutions Management Agency Professor Salisu Ahmad ibrahim has pledge to partner with any progressive health association to compliment Kano State Government efforts in enhancing Private Health Institution in the State.


The Director General disclose this while interacting with members of Nigerian Association of patient proprietary medicine vendors, when they paid him a familiarity visit at the conference hall of the agency.


In his remarks the chairman of the association mohammad nura abubakar Wudil congratulate DG PHIMA for the new appointment, describing it a well deserved and urge him to maintain the existing cordial relationship to move the health sector forward.


He said in 1999 almost 6000 thausand members were registered by the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria yet a lot found it difficult to get access to their licence despite the annual registration renewal.


The Chairman then solicited the support of the state government to shoulder the responsibility of sponsoring special programmes and training workshops for it’s members to acquire knowledge and technical know how inorder to make them qualify in their profession.


in his remarks DG PHIMA Professor Salisu Ahmad ibrahim thanks the association for the visit stressing that, the state government is ready to partner with health association to mobilise vulnerable among the citizens to have access to medical care, “that is why lafiya Jari was introduced to assist people in the state, and i will advise government to engage your members in lafiya jari to make the system more effective” said the DG.


He however drew the attention of the executive members of the association to ensure that each drug seller register with PSN in order to bring sanity in to the system with a view to fish out unqualified personal among them, also said it will bring more revenue generation if a proper verification was conducted.


The Director General assure them his redness to operate an open door policy to carry everybody along, hence advise those who have problems with PCN to write a petition and forward it to his office.

…As Mercy Corps, USAID,  Lays Foundation Stone for Clinic at Rijiyar Lemo PHC

Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partner with Non Governmental organizations in its effort to boosting the health sector.


The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this at the flag-off and laying foundation ceremony for the construction of clinic at Rijiyar Lemo Primary Health Care Center in Fagge local government initiated By Mercy Corps, USAID and Community Action Committee.


The Commissioner represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Hajiya Amina Aliyu Musa, highlighted on the commitment so far made under the present administration, stressing that Government will continue to give more priority attention to the health sector.


The Commissioner commended the effort of the Mercy Corp and other partners under the umbrella of the Community Initiative to Promote Peace(CIPP) in the area for their contribution toward the success of the program in the area.


In his remarks,  Chief of Party of the Community Initiative to Promote Peace (CIPP) Mr. David Gatare spoke at length on the activities of CIPP which, according to him, is aimed at preventing violent conflict in the most at-risk communities across Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Kogi, Kano and Benue states in Nigeria’s North-West and Middle Belt regions, adding that CIPP works with community leaders, women, government officials and state-level actors to improve their ability to peacefully manage disputes.


Mr. Gatare further stated that CIPP also works to strengthen Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) mechanisms for timely response to violent conflict, and facilitate collaboration among communities with government agencies, civil service organizations and local leaders to address root causes of conflict.


He therefore call on the community in the area to always live in peace with one another and stressed the need for the state government as well as the community to ensure that the facility if completed will be maintained at all time.


In his remarks via internet, Muktar Shitu from USAID also thank Kano State Government for the support and cooperation rendered in realizing the objectives for the establishment of the clinic and urged people in the area to make judicious use of the facility.


In his welcome address, the Conflict Technical Advisor CIPP Mr. Godwin Okoko used the opportunity to welcome all and thank all the communities for coming out en-mass during the laying foundation ceremony.


Earlier in his remarks, the Council Chairman of Fagge local government Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad commended the effort of Mercy Corps, USAID and other partners who supported the program, promising that staff and other relevant working material will be provided for the smooth takeoff of the facility when completed.


In his vote of thanks, the District Head of Fagge Alhaji Mahmud Ado Bayero commended both Mercy Corps and USAID for the construction of the clinic at Rijiyar Lemo which, according to him, will benefit other neighbouring communities.


He called on the state government to provide staff and relevant working material for the smooth operation of the facility after completion.


Later, the District Head presented a commendation letter to the Chief of Party CIPP Mr. David Gatare for the commitment and dedication towards the realization of the project at Fagge Local Government area.

KANO STATE GOVERNMENT VOWS TO IMPROVE LIVING STANDARD OF WOMEN, CHILDREN AND THE DISABLED,—COMMISSIONER SAJI REVEALS

The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Women, Children and the Disabled, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji, has reiterated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s determination to improve the living standard of women, children and the disabled in the state.


She made the reiteration today at the state’s Vesicovarginal Fistula Rehabilitation Center, Kwalli during a graduation ceremony of 40 rehabilitated fistula survivors, organized by Fistula Foundation in conjunction with Kano State Ministry of women, Children and the Disabled.


She also described the administration of Eng. Abba Kabir Yusuf as a women’s administration considering the importance of women and the roles they played in helping the government to fulfill it’s desired goals.


She further appreciated Governor Yusuf for his quick response after revealing a case of inadequate beds at the V.V.F ward of Laure Fistula Foundation located at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano which resulted in the immediate provision of more beds thereby raising the number of beds at the ward to 21.


In her speech, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of women, Children and the Disabled, Dr. Sa’adatu Sa’id Bala thanked the Fistula Foundation Chairman, Mr. Musa Isa and urged beneficiaries to use their empowerment materials appropriately.


In his remark the founder, Fistula Foundation, Mr. Isa acknowledged the support being given by the ministry and appreciated the commissioner for gracing the occasion.



Some of the beneficiaries Hafsat Dawakin Kudu, and Hajara Uba shared their happiness and urged government to make it mandatory for health workers especially those at the maternity ward to be out of those participating during nation wide strike, noting that strike was the cause of her problem after an unattended prolonged labor session.

PHIMA SEAL KAINUWA MEDICAL FACILITY

The Director General 0f Private Health Institution Management Agency Professor Salisu Ahmad ibrahim has directed his staff operational team to seal Kainuwa Medical Centre Hotoro with immediate effect.



The Director General disclose this at the conference hall of the agency during a meeting with the Head of the Medical centre.


He said Closing the Centre became necessary considering the numerous complaints received against the credibility of providing unqualified personals and equipment.


Added that according to the investigation conducted by his task force Committee the centre lack four factors responsible for the establishment of either clinic or hospital among which includes failure to register with PHIMA, keeping drugs at their Pharmacy more than what is required by the law, lack of qualify doctors for medical checking to patients when the need arise as well as lack of qualified nurses who will render medical services while admitting the Patients.


He therefore drew the attention of all the health private institutions in the state to ensure that they meets the requirements of the law.


In another development Solina Centre for International Development and Research paid a courtesy visit to DG PHIMA.


In his remarks the Executive Program Director Adesola Arowolo said the Primary objective of the program is to reduce maternal mortality rates and strengthen system for safer child birth across public and Private facilities in three states Kano, Delta and Lagos.


While responding in the conference hall of the Agency DG PHIMA Professor Salisu Ahmad thanks delegation for the visit, pledge to work with them to move Kano State forward.

Immunization: KNSG Assured to Produce Reboost Annual RI Work Plan For 2024

Kano state Government has pledged to place more emphasis on the Routine Immunization exercise for the betterment of the People of the state.

The Commissioner of Health Dr. Abubakar Labarin Yusuf made this known while declaring a 3- Day Routine Immunization Annual work plan for the year 2024, held at Hotel Seventeen in Kaduna State.
The Commissioner pledged that the year 2024 is expected to record a tremendous success as the performance of the Routine Immunization base on the comprehensive work plan at the end of the meeting.


He urged all the stakeholders who are responsible for the conduct of the Routine Immunization program especially at the local government areas to redouble efforts in the discharge of their responsibilities as the present administration will not condone laxity or nonchalant attitude, that would course the hindering of the success of the routine immunization exercise.


Dr. Labarin Yusuf then commended the state government and development partners for commiting huge resources towards the successful conduct of the exercise and other health related issues in the State.


In his remarks, the Director General Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board Dr. Muhammad Nasir Mahmoud highlighted on the objectives of the work plan that includes, to review the status implementation of the 2024 RI plan, highlight the 2023 key routine immunization achievement, challenges, recommendations and also developed a comprehensive 2024 RI work plan.

Dr. Nasir then assured the state government that a robust RI work plan for the state will produce after the work plan and therefore urged the participants to be committed and dedicated for the success of the work plan.


In their goodwill messages, the representatives of National Primary Health Care Development Agency, UNICEF, LAFIYA PROJECT, AFENET, BMGF and KSECCOH assured to continue providing support so as to compliment the Kano State Government efforts in boosting the Health sector.


The meeting which is a yearly event is attended by the Staff of the primary health care management and partners to produce a comprehensive RI Annual Work plan.

KNSG To Redeploy Teaching Staff Posted to LEA offices On Sentiment Reason- Doguwa

Kano State Commissioner Ministry of Education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa has announced that the ministry will redeploy teaching staff posted to the local education offices for sentiment reasons.


The Commissioner noted that many local education offices across the 44 local government areas of the state are filled up with staff who are supposed to be in the classrooms, but for one reason or the other remained at LEA offices doing nothing.


” It is really disturbing to note that most of our local education offices are accommodated with competent staff who are suppose to be in the class rooms but are there at LEA wasting time, while hundred of primary schools are having only one teacher” Doguwa lamented.


Umar Doguwa made the statement today evening during a meeting with 44 Local Government Education Secretaries and Zonal Education Directors of the State Universal Basic Education Board, held at Rumfa Collage.


He emphasized that as from now, no LEA office should have more than 30 staff, stressing that ” any number above this figure will be redeployed to class rooms for proper utilization.


Doguwa further announced that the present administration is making arrangements to mobilize adequate resources to ensure effective school monitoring in the state.


As part of the monitoring measures, said the Commissioner, the ministry would soon reinforce effective use of time book as well as movement book to be signed by all staff of primary schools and send to LEA on monthly basis for proper checking.


On the illegal posting of public schools teachers to private schools, Commissioner Doguwa cautioned that government would take serious action against any officer found wanted.


” we are fully aware on how some public schools teachers are posted to private schools living our primary schools in dear need of teachers, at the same time enjoying their salaries as government workers, that must be stopped and we can no longer tolerate it.


” We want you to bring the list of all the schools under your offices and their staff to enable the ministry address issues on shortage of staff ” he ordered.


He however, disclosed that with report of the strategic committee being set up to reopen all the boding schools closed down by the past immediate administration, arrangements have been concluded to reopen eleven boarding schools during the next coming school term.


” At the end of the day, we want to see that by next year, all our bording schools resume operation and will be provided with all what they need to ensure conducive learning ” Doguwa added.


The Commissioner then assured of the present administration commitment to provide it’s civil servants with all the needed support to enhance their performance.


Also speaking, the Executive Secretary Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado hinted that proper management is the key to the success of education system.


Kabiru Ado said ” it is clear that lack of good management in our education sector brings about the issue of corruption and that has today destroyed our education system “


Earlier, the Acting chairperson of the Board Hajiya Amina Umar explained that the meeting was organized to discuss issues regarding primary education and how to improve the system.


She commended the present administration for it’s zeals in coming up with policies and programmes aimed at improving the education sector.


During the meeting, questions and contributions on how to improve the primary education were entertained.

Shun Away From Drug Abuse- Comm. K/Mata Advised Students

The Kano State Commissioner Ministry for higher education, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata has warned students of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil to avoid drug abuse.


Dr. Kofarmata gave the warning yesterday during a meeting with stakeholders at theatre hall of the University in a continuation of familiarzation visit to state-owned tertiary institutions.


He pointed out that drug abuse is the major social vices that destroy human life, urged the students’ union to serve as ambassadors in order to create massive awareness camping against the menace.

The Commissioner assured that government would not spare any student found using or selling drugs in all state-owned institutions.


Dr. Yusuf also said in order to enhance other curriculum activities, the state government would soon set up a sports committee that would organize sports competitions within all state-owned institutions.


In his remark, the Vice Chancellor of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, congratulated the Commissioner for his appointment which he described as well deserved.


He said the university has numerous challenges, which include inherited liability of the defunct administration worth N2.5 billion, pension staff among others.


He then urged the Hon. Commissioner to intervene on the lingering issues for the development of the University and education in general.
Responding on the demands presented by the Vice Chancellor, the Commissioner said the government will look into the issues for immediate possible solutions.


The visit was rounded up with interective session from academic and non-academic staff, students union, community of the university, among others.
