Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s Grip on Kano: The Dictatorial Leadership Sparking Internal Conflict within NNPP

By: Dr. Sagir S Buhari, FCIA

Democracy is a system of government where power belongs to the people, protected by individual rights and freedoms, free and fair elections, rule of law, separation of powers, accountability and transparency. Democracy provides numerous benefits, including good governance, peaceful coexistence, economic growth and social justice.

To sustain democracy, citizens have essential responsibilities such as participating in elections, holding leaders accountable and engaging in civic activities. Understanding democracy promotes informed citizenship, effective governance and peaceful coexistence, which are essential for a prosperous and harmonious society.

However, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State is embroiled in a heated power struggle, fueled by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s dictatorial leadership style. This autocratic approach has stifled party members’ autonomy, sparking widespread criticism and resentment. At the center of this conflict is Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who assumed office on May 29, 2023. Kwankwaso’s dominance within the NNPP raises concerns about Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s ability to govern independently, as Abba Kabir Yusuf is Kwankwaso’s son-in-law and former personal assistant.

Kwankwaso’s centralized leadership style has led to accusations of overbearing influence, undermining Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s capacity for independent decision-making. Favoritism and nepotism pervade the party, with key positions allocated based on loyalty rather than merit. A recent incident highlighted the internal conflict: while Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reconciled Secretary to the State Government, Dr Baffa Bichi, and the State Assembly Member representing Bichi, the NNPP Chairman suspended Dr Baffa Bichi and Commissioner of Transport, Muhammad Diggol, from the party.

Former Governor, His Excellency , Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s tenure (2015-2023) clashed with Senator Kwankwaso, demonstrating Ganduje’s ability to assert independence and prioritize state interests. His leadership brought numerous projects and development initiatives to Kano State and presently serving the country as the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC).

The unfolding drama underscores the complexities of Nigerian politics and the NNPP’s fragile internal dynamics. Potential fragmentation looms, destabilizing Kano’s political landscape. Kwankwaso’s leadership style and Yusuf’s governorship negatively impact governance and development in the state.

To ensure effective governance, development and stability, the NNPP must resolve the power struggle and promote democratic principles. This requires addressing internal conflicts, prioritizing merit over loyalty and ensuring leaders serve the people’s interests.

Tribute to Late Honourable Hajiya Surayya Aminu (SAI MAMA)

By: Dr Sagir Sadisu Buhari FCIA.

What a sad day! I had taken a break from my phone for two days to rest and recover from malaria. But upon switching it back on this Sunday morning, I received devastating news: Hajiya Surayya Aminu, fondly known as SAI MAMA, had passed away.

“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajiun” (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return).

Late Hajiya Surayya Aminu (SAI MAMA) was an extraordinary woman, known for her hard work, loyalty and dedication to her cause. She was a sister to my friend Mohammed Sa’ad. One of her admirable qualities was her commitment to Islam, evident in her modest dressing and punctual daily prayers.

I admired her unwavering loyalty to our father and mentor, His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (OFR), National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). We often discussed promoting Baba Ganduje’s interests, and she would thoughtfully comment on my articles. Her enthusiasm and kindness inspired many.

Notably, anytime I posted an article in our political whattapp groups, she was among the few who would comment, showing her genuine interest in promoting our shared vision. I recall about four days ago where she wrote an article about the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (PhD, CON). I comment by writing “EXCELLENT HONOURABLE,” and she replied, “THANK YOU OUR CAPABLE DG.” This exchange showcased her humility, loyalty and dedication.

We’ve lost a sister and a good political associate, but her legacy will live on. Words aren’t enough to express our sorrow, but we can only pray for Allah Subhanahu Wata Ala to grant her Aljannat Fiddaus.

Rest in peace, SAI MAMA.
