Nigeria’s Oil Subsidy Conundrum: Economic Sense or Political Shenanigans?

By Abbati Bako,Kent Alumni UK and
Political Strategy And Communications Consultant—

My first point of call is to find out the meaning of the word “conundrum” and according to the latest meaning of the word in the new English  Dictionary of 2024 the word means “brain-teaser, enigma, puzzle or riddle”.

This writing understands that the game can be described as a political shenanigans. Meaning that the whole issue can be described as a political statement or political rhetoric to satisfy own-self.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has debunked the notion behind the idea for the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria. Speaking last week Friday at a press conference on behalf of the IMF and World Bank in an annual meetings in Washington DC, United States, Abebe Selassie, the IMF’s African Region Director, “described the decision to the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu as a domestic affairs”. Can this be fact, political statement or political shenanigans with a view to sacrifice and truncate President Tunubu’s chances in elections’ year 2027?

The Washington Consensus was initiated in 1989 by British economist Professor John Williamson, who worked for the Institute for International Economics. This set of economic policy prescriptions was designed for developing countries, particularly in Latin America, and emphasized free-market principles, trade liberalization, fuel subsidy removal, tax reforms, privatization, and finance liberalization.

The Washington Consensus was a response to the debt crisis in developing countries during the 1980s. The major Western powers, led by the United States, decided that the World Bank and IMF should play a significant role in managing this debt and shaping global development policy. And these reforms have been for the economic emerging markets of Africa, Asia, Latin America and all nations in the global South and even in the Eastern European Nations.

The core principles of the Washington Consensus include:

– Fiscal Discipline: Avoid large fiscal deficits relative to GDP

– Redirection of Public Spending: Focus on key pro-growth, pro-poor services like primary education, healthcare, and infrastructure investment

-Tax Reform: Broaden the tax base and adopt moderate marginal tax rates-

-Market-Determined Interest Rates: Positive and moderate in real terms

– Competitive Exchange Rates:

– Trade Liberalization:
Eliminate quantitative restrictions and protect trade with low tariffs

-Liberalization of Inward Foreign Direct Investment:

-Privatization of State Enterprises:

– Deregulation: Abolish regulations that impede market entry or restrict competition

– Legal Security for Property Rights:

While the Washington Consensus was influential in shaping economic policies in the 1990s, its legacy is complex and contested. Critics argue that it led to socioeconomic exclusion, weakened trade unions, and failed to deliver significant economic growth or poverty relief in many countries. In a nutshell, who shall we trust; the World Bank/IMF or Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s government? Remember that Nigeria and other Global Southern Hemisphere has been into economic aridity, meltdown, hardship and precarity.

Hence, in my last writing last week I advocated the admittance of Nigeria into BRICS Nations ASAP. This is for the fact that the organization may likely and positively charge the global economic interplay. With Nigeria within the “World Development Bank” the economic fortune of Nigeria may positively change for the better and may benefit the current generation and indeed, future generations.

Democracy Under Siege: Addressing Electoral Malpractice in Kano State

Dr. Sagir S. Buhari, FCIA

By: Dr. Sagir S. Buhari, FCIA

The recent local government elections in Kano State, have raised serious concerns about the democratic process in Nigeria. Reports of disregard for court orders, ballot paper snatching, destruction, and rigging are not only a blatant disregard for democratic principles but also tarnish the reputation and image of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration and Kano State globally.

These allegations of electoral malpractice undermine the integrity of the electoral process, eroding trust in the system and compromising the legitimacy of the election results. The people of Kano State deserve free, fair, and credible elections, and it’s crucial for authorities to investigate these allegations and ensure accountability.

The lack of transparency in the electoral process is particularly concerning, making it difficult to track the authenticity of the results. Furthermore, reports of voting irregularities and manipulation have marred the elections, casting doubt on the credibility of the outcome. The presence of intimidation and violence during the elections has also raised concerns about the safety of voters.

To address these concerns, stakeholders must work towards electoral reforms that promote transparency and accountability in the electoral process. This includes educating voters on their rights and the importance of participating in free and fair elections. Ensuring the rules and regulations of the electoral process are in place to prevent intimidation and violence during elections is also essential.

Nigeria has been working on electoral reforms since its return to civil rule in 1999. The country’s electoral reforms include financial autonomy of the electoral umpire, introduction of electronic processes, and exclusion of party members from acting as electoral officers. Despite these efforts, the lack of transparency in the electoral process and reports of voting irregularities and manipulation have marred the recent Kano State local government elections, casting doubt on the credibility of the outcome.

The presence of intimidation and violence during the elections has also raised concerns about the safety of voters. The international community is watching, and Nigeria’s reputation as a democratic nation hangs in the balance. Immediate action is necessary to address these concerns and ensure future elections are conducted fairly, freely, and transparently.

Ultimately, only through these efforts can the people of Kano State trust the democratic process and have confidence in the legitimacy of the election results. It is imperative that authorities take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that future elections are conducted in a fair, free, and transparent manner.

BARAU JIBRIN: METHODICALLY DECIMATING THE KWANKWASSIYA EMPIRE

By Concern Citizen

…The recent massive decamping of their adherents to Apc is a clear signal that the ship is slowly wrecking.

A tantalizing and splendid scenario is recently unfolding in Kano state political hemisphere where the hardcore and fatalistic adherents of Kwankwassiya fold who are known for their blindfolded dedication to their leader and the political sect are finally losing their ironfisted bond by decamping in mass almost on daily basis, changing their allegiance and support, by joining the opposition Apc and in the process breaking the bond with the presume all powerful leader, known for his arrogance and egocentric nature, talking about the former State Governor and Senator, a present leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

It is on record that his socalled party has only one state in it’s kitty which is Kano state and even it’s victory was based  on legal tussle which it’s questionable verdict still remain a subject of debates despites it’s finality on the political hemisphere. They brazenly display that power with nostalgia as the state governor is openly been teleguided and remote controled by the presumed Godfather who is the leader of the said kwankwasiyya fold with the said governor as a chosen prince of the said Fraternity.

And despites the fact that they have the said NNPP as their party, it’s an open secret that they only used their party as a symbol and a ticket to be relevance in the political arena where they can constitutionally compete for a position during election contest, but their Kwankwassiya fold it’s their badge and symbol of identity.

Their members and adherents are bunch of fraternity that were hooked, dictated, hypnotized, brainwashed, embroidered, teleguided, and made to believed anything that comes from the confined of their dictatorial leader without question or independent mind to challenge or undermine his authority.

Despites the fact that they are accidentally in power in the state with the man’s stooge and errand boy as the ultimate Supremo, ninety percent of the ardent followers are presently aggrieved and wallowing in painful anger which they can’t voice out due to the bondage they engraved with. The so-called dividends of democracy is no where to be enjoy and nourish despite their loyalty and dedication to the cause.

Then suddenly, a Messiah emerged from the opposition party who is ready and eager to butter their bread and brought relief and succor to their dying sprit. A powerful, resourceful, connected, dependable power broker who is deeply concerned about their plight and ready to brought a remedy. The nation fifth most powerful citizen. A deputy Senate President who is politically sound and mastered the game with skill that delight the watching world.

Kwankwaso been a leader of the sect is presently living in cloud nine as it is visibly cleared his chosen son who is on the driving seat proves to be loyal and answerable to his dictate in the overall discharge of his responsibilities. Most of the appointees in the government are his preferred stooges who were handpicked by the all powerful dictator. He harbour no power or authority of his own, as things are dictate according to the directives of the Godfather and in that regard it’s hold is visibly open in every aspect of governance from appointment to disbursement of contracts on projects.

The Governor is simply there to do the bidding of the ultimate Supremo of the sect without question or independent execution of policies or deeds in regards to the administration of the state

Is laughable how their so-called leader love to dictate and showcases his supremacy over the said political group with brazen boldness and egocentric manipulation. But ironically, he is known to be stingy and deeply engrossed in self centred accumulation with disdain towards offering an olive oil to his ardent followers.

Senator Maliya is admiringly wrecking the boat as he is presently receiving their followers to the opposition Apc with brazen speed that tantamount to total destruction of the said fold as the man is using his mastery of politics which leaves political watchers in awe and admiration while the leader of the fraternity is watching with fear as the scenario is giving him a devastating blow wondering how the Senator is making his grip and power dwindling with devastating effects beyond his wildest imagination.

And it astonishingly cleared that the all powerful Senator is on rampage, going with devastating speed as almost on daily basis, adherents of Kwankwassiya sect are trooping in to his home or office, submitting themselves and their political allegiance to his party and in extension his political block which its existence is presently unknown.

We are living witness that prominent personalities from Kwankwassiya fold who trooping in with hundreds of their followers who are been absorbed and integrated in to the Apc. Several testimonies are been revealed which exposed the inhuman and politically dehumanizing treatment the members are being subjected in the hands of their former emperor.

It was a pitiful and heartbreaking stories as members exposed the dictatorial syndrome of their hitherto powerful leader in which their massive contributions to the success of the party were not recognized least of all dolling out gratitudes. The leader always recognized success or victory as his personal glory which his name guaranteed and others contributions is simply a myth believes by blinded self deceivers. Quite absurd!

And there is no gainsaying the fact the Senator is gradually taking the reins and wearing the toga of an ultimate political leader of the party though he remains humble and submissive to the presumed authority in regards to the leadership of the party in the state.

But any personality with such political might, clout, indefinable mastery of the game and armed with charisma, resource and power to attract such spellbounded adherents to the notable fold, whom are daily pouring in to him seeking revival and accomodations, that individual deserved to be respected and accorded his rightful place in the political scheme.

The Senator is indeed a messiah not just to the fleeying adherents of Kwankwassiya sect but to the entire party itself. One can say unapologetically without fear of disputing or challenge that the party has finally been blessed with a powerful individual on its fold who is set to destroy and bring an end to the Kwankwaso hold on his people and from all indication the so-called Kwankwassiya fraternity are on the verge of final political extinction courtesy of the glaring and indispensable political giant called Barau Maliya.

I stand to be corrected.

Concern Citizen writes from Kano.
